The Rosh Yeshiva

We have suffered an awesome loss. Rosh yeshiva of Ponovezh yeshiva for 54 years, one of the premier avdei Hashem for more than 90 years, Maran HaRav Dovid Povarsky, zt'l, was a towering figure who guided many thousands.

He was a true symbol of toil in Torah. In his more than 50 years at Ponovezh, he used to arrive daily at 4 a.m., to learn until shacharis. In his last decade, he was able to move it up and came daily at 1:30 a.m.!

And despite his intense personal commitment to Torah, he always had time for a talmid. He had limitless patience to hear him out, to search out what was truly the issue, and to provide the guidance that ensured that the talmid would not stray from the derech Hashem.

He was truly a source of light to the entire generation.
