OPINION & COMMENT
Even though Ehud Barak won and he is the candidate of the
Left, his difficulties in putting together a government have
made it clear that the country as a whole -- and certainly
not the Jews -- did not vote for the Left. This is the
reality that the Left has never come to terms with: they are
in the minority in Israel.
How Not to Defeat Ourselves
In the elections of 5741 (1981), the Labor party received forty-seven seats. Four years earlier in 5737 (1977), the Labor party had crashed and only got thirty-two seats. In a short period of time, the party increased its power by fifty percent. A mighty victory in Israeli politics.
The Broken Luchos
The forty-day period between 17 Tammuz and Rosh Chodesh Elul is when Moshe ascended to Heaven to appease HaKodosh Boruch Hu. Moshe succeeded in mitigating the midas hadin, which had been aroused against bnei Yisroel because of their sin with the Golden Calf.
"This is the statute of the Torah -- I have enacted a statute and you have no permission to question it" -- (Rashi).
This is a reminder, says the Chasam Sofer, that the entire Torah is, in effect, far beyond human comprehension. We study Torah and attempt to understand it. We may sometimes believe that we have succeeded in grasping something, but we must never forget that the Torah is no mere book that is no more profound than the human mind that composed it. The Torah is, after all, divine.
