Ancient Bones Desecrated by Archaeologists are Reburied

by Betzalel Kahn

A group of volunteers on behalf of the Federation for the Prevention of the Desecration of Graves displayed considerable mesiras nefesh and cherdas kodesh last week, when they reburied a vast quantity of bones of our ancestors. The bones had been desecrated and crushed by archaeologists in a most disgraceful manner.

Two weeks ago, Haifa University archaeologists desecrated a number of ancient graves discovered during a "rescue excavation" conducted within the limits of the construction at Elad-Mazor. All graves found on the site were emptied of their contents. The bones, which had lain undisturbed for thousands of years, were strewn all over the vicinity in a disgraceful manner.

The volunteers spent long hours in the beating sun, gathering bones and bone fragments which they then reburied, according to halocho, in their original burial sites. The volunteers, who regarded their work as a sacred mission, expressed the hope that these bones will never again be disinterred, and that our sacred ancients will be granted repose until the arrival of Moshiach tzidkenu.
